I don't really share this to a lot of people, but I'm a huge wrestling fan ever since I was a child. So in this post, I'm going to review one of WWE's big four pay-per-view Survivor Series.
I specifically like this PPV as there was not a single match I skipped (well, okay, except for the pre-show matches). Every match there was a build in the previous weeks in both respective shows like Raw and SmackDown before the event. I'm not going into detail about the build as I have missed some shows so I'm just going to talk about the matches and their results. Brock Lesnar vs Goldberg was advertised as the main event and the match that I was really looking forward to since Goldberg hasn't been seen wrestling in WWE for almost twelve years. His last match was in Wrestlemania XX which his opponent was also Brock Lesnar. Goldberg won their last match but most fans would agree that it wasn't even a good match.
Traditional 5-on-5 Survivor Series Match Women's Division
Team RAW (Bayley, Alicia Fox, Nia Jax, Sasha Banks, and Charlotte Flair w/ Dana Brooke) vs. Team Smackdown Live (Becky Lynch, Naomi, Alexa Bliss, Carmella, and Natalya)
Expectations before the match:
I was expecting Team Raw to win as WWE has up the ante on the women's division in Raw by making the Woman's Championship a main event in Hell in a Cell compared to SmackDown which hasn't done really noticeable since Becky Lynch won the SmackDown Women's Championship. For the survivors (note: WWE calls it sole survivors but that's just grammatically incorrect), I wasn't really sure who to pick but I was expecting more than one survivor for Raw.
During the match:
Team Raw won this as expected.
Before the match started, Nikki Bella was quickly replaced by Natalya after an unknown assaulter knocked her on the head. It looked really more like a build for a rivalry between Nikki Bella and Natalya in the future, plus the event was in Canada so the crowd would have loved Canada's own Natalya.
As for the order of elimination, I was surprised Sasha got eliminated earlier. Nia Jax tapping out seemed like WWE is signalling to bury her despite her dominating and intimidating figure.
For the survivors, I'm glad Bailey was one of the survivors as she was basically the one who eliminated a lot of the SmackDown women at the end, putting her in a possible Women's Championship picture. Raw Women's Champion Charlotte attacking her at the end was further proof of it.
Possible Aftermath:
Raw
Bailey will be in the women's title picture if Charlotte wins her title match on Raw against Sasha Banks. If Banks wins, a possible triple threat match would come.
SmackDown
I was expecting a TLC match in the TLC PPV between Becky and Alexa to make WWE look like its serious for their Women's division in SmackDown, but they announced it would be a tables match, which is still awesome. I do hope Alexa Bliss wins. She knows how to use the mic and wrestles well, and not because I am really attracted to her.
A Nikki and Natalya rivalry will start after Nikki finds out Natalya was the one who knocked her out.
Match Rating: 4.2/5
WWE Intercontinental Championship Match (If Sami Zayn wins, the championship goes to Raw)
The Miz (c) w/ Maryse vs. Sami Zayn
Expectations before the match:
I was expecting for Dolph Ziggler to hold the title for a long time to face Sami Zayn but The Miz is pretty sensible since he is a heel and I'm really starting to hate him winning because of all the intervention of other people. I think that shows an effective heel (heels are after all the bad guys in wrestling). On the result, I would say The Miz wins this one as there is no way WWE is going to leave SmackDown without a midcard title unless they do it for the unpredictability.
During the match:
As expected of the end, Miz wins with someone intervening, but this time it was Maryse ringing the bell before Miz could tap out to the submission hold making Sami think he won. Then the roll up happened to claim the victory. It was a change of pace than the usual Spirit Squad and Maryse spraying perfume on Miz's opponent. It was a good match.
Possible Aftermath:
Miz
Miz is to continue his feud with Dolph Ziggler since Ziggler hasn't been given a rematch, yet.
Sami Zayn
I like that Zayn is finally in the main matches than in the pre-show matches. Currently he has a feud with Braun Strowman to get Strowman a legit opponent from the jobbers, but I'm looking forward for Zayn to have a good year next year.
Match Rating: 4.0/5
Traditional 10-on-10 Survivor Series Match Tag Team Division
Team RAW (Enzo and Big Cass, The Shining Stars, Anderson and Gallows, Sheamus and Cesaro, and The New Day) vs. Team Smackdown Live (Heath Slater and Rhyno, Breezango, The Usos, The Hype Bros, and American Alpha)
Expectations before the match: Honestly, I was expecting this win to be given to SmackDown since I was hoping for Team SmackDown to win the overall tally. I also expected American Alpha to become the survivors or one of the survivors to give them the tag team title picture they so deserve.
During the match: The shocker there was the Raw Tag Team Champions, The New Day, getting eliminated first for the Raw Team. There was an awesome brawl of all the remaining tag teams in the middle of the match. It was down to the tag team of Sheamus and Cesaro for Raw and The Usos for Smackdown. With near fall after near fall, it was one of the awesome parts of the match.
Possible Aftermath:
Raw
I'm just dying for the day the The New Day to lose their title. I like them but it's time to give it to some other deserving tag teams like Enzo and Big Cass, The Club, or Sheamus and Cesaro (I like the part about them not getting along). But WWE looks like they want The New Day to surpass The Super Destroyers' record high title reign.
SmackDown
I'm seeing a possible tag team championship change soon in TLC or Royal Rumble. Basing on the match, I was expecting the Usos but it looks like WWE wants the newly formed partnership between Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton to win the title.
Match Rating: 4.4/5
WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match (If Kalisto wins, the Cruiserweights move to Smackdown)
Kalisto vs. Brian Kendrick (c)
Expectations before the match:
This one to me is really obvious. Kendrick retains his championship as SmackDown does not have enough time to air cruiserweight matches with their 2 hour format compared to Raw which has a 3 hour format.
During the match:
Brian Kendrick won (obviously) but with the help of SmackDown's own Baron Corbin. Kalisto and Baron Corbin were in a bitter rivalry in the previous months so I think it was expected. I just watch this because it was a cruiserweight match. It's always entertaining to watch cruiserweights as they have more set of moves and rarely use the generic ones compared to the heavyweights.
Possible Aftermath:
Rich Swann won the Cruiserweight championship against Brian Kendrick so it looks like their will be a rivalry between those two in the coming months.
Baron Corbin and Kalisto will have a match on TLC probably ending their long feud.
Match Rating: 4.2/5
Traditional 5-on-5 Survivor Series Match Men's Division
Team Smackdown (Shane McMahon, Bray Wyatt, Randy Orton, AJ Styles, and Dean Ambrose w/ James Ellsworth) vs. Team RAW (Braun Strowman, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Chris Jericho, and Kevin Owens)
Expectations before the match: I personally like this match because there are some personal enmities between some of the superstars of opposite sides that are revived before the brand split happened last July. I did expect this match to be won by SmackDown.
During the match:
Team SmackDown won but it seemed pointless since Team Raw was up 3-1 before the victory. It was entertaining, though. Possibly the best match of the event.
Some highlights of the match, Kevin Owens using the List of Jericho as a weapon getting himself disqualified. Braun Strowman eliminated by countout because of James Ellsworth. Dean Ambrose turning on his teammate AJ Styles, aligning himself with Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns to have a short Shield reunion. Shane McMahon's high risk manuevers (always a daredevil).
Possible Aftermath:
Raw
Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho's friendship will at some point end and Y2J challenges him for the Universal Title.
Reigns gets a title match for Road Block but I don't think he'll win.
Rollins at some point will have a new rival taking him out of the title picture.
Braun Strowman continues his feud with Sami Zayn but will probably move on to another bigger fish. Roman Reigns for the US Title, perhaps.
SmackDown
AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose are set for a match in TLC but it looks like Styles will win to set for a title match against the returning Undertaker in the Royal Rumble ppv. Dean Ambrose will probably turn heel at some point.
Bray Wyatt and Orton will probably win the Tag Titles and will have a rivalry with Rhyno and Slater.
Shane McMahon will enter the Royal Rumble. Probably.
Match Rating: 4.8/5
Brock Lesnar w/ Paul Heyman vs. Goldberg
Expectations before the match: I'm expecting it to be better than their 2004 match. The only thing I liked about it was Stone Cold stunning both of them. I'm hoping they redeem themselves in this match. The scenario I'm looking at was if Goldberg wins then Brock gets obsess beating Goldberg to have another match in Wrestlemania. If Brock wins, Goldberg will ask for another match in Wrestlemania to settle who is the better beast.
During the match:
The match ended less than 2 minutes that I can summarize it in one paragraph:
The bell rings. Lesnar charges Goldberg dragging him to the corner. Goldberg looks unfazed and pushes Lesnar to the ground. Lesnar picks himself up but before he could ready himself, Goldberg spears out of nowhere! Goldberg goes to the corner for another spear and executes it well for the second time. Lesnar gets up again and Golberg connects with a Jackhammer! 1-2-3 Goldberg wins!
The match was shockingly short and I mean that in both a good and a bad way. It was good for the shock factor and I was utterly surprised considering WWE booked Lesnar as a monster when he returned to wrestling. But, I just wanted the match to be longer just to have the nostalgia of Goldberg wrestling again as he did in WCW. Then again, I also got what I want since it was the 1997 Goldberg that came into that match.
I praise WWE for this unpredictability.
Possible Aftermath:
The next Raw after Survivor Series announced Goldberg to enter the Royal Rumble this January. The next Raw after that also announced that Lesnar will be in the Rumble. My prediction, neither of those two will win and continue a third match in Wrestlemania.
Match Rating: 4.7
